Since it’s the beginning of the year, January is one of the best months for a fresh start. It’s a good time to start new projects or prepare your home and family for winter weather.

Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

Throughout the winter, you’ll be using the heaters and fireplaces more frequently. To keep your family safe, you should check all of the carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in the house. Go around the house and press the test button on each device. If you need to, change the batteries in the devices.

Organize Winter Accessories

If you stored cold-weather accessories in your closets, entryway baskets, drawers or elsewhere during the warm months, it’s time to take them out and to organize them. Keep your winter socks, mittens, scarves and hats where you can find them. Replace any items that you need to.

Take Stock of Board Games

Winter is known for its harsh weather. Since you’re bound to be indoors more often, take stock and organize your board games. Board games and cards can be a great way to pull the family together. If you have games that your family doesn’t enjoy, consider donating them.

Consider Moisture for Plants

Heaters and fireplaces can dry out the air around you. If you have plants, such as ferns or citrus trees, they need moisture to thrive. A humidifier can be an easy answer to any dry air issues. You can also use a spray bottle to spritz the plants.

Refresh Playrooms

When children are stuck indoors, it is easy for them to become bored. You can help alleviate the boredom by refreshing their play spaces. You may want to add a play tent, whiteboard or even a tumbling mat to encourage more creative play while indoors.

Clear out Clothing Clutter

With the new year, you should also consider a new wardrobe. If you have clothes that you don’t wear, stop holding onto them. When you remove clutter from your home, it can be a freeing experience.

Clean the Pantry

To clean out the pantry, remove any state or expired foods, wipe down the shelves and replenish what you lost. A refreshed refrigerator or pantry can make it easier for you to stick to any new healthy lifestyle choices you have this winter.
